Globally, the frequency of emerging and re-emerging diseases and food safety threats, and their impact on human health have increased over recent decades. Many of these threats originate from the interfaces among humans, animals (including wildlife), the agrifood production and distribution chain and the environment. These diseases and hazards/threats have major impacts on animal and human health, agrifood trade and national and global economies. Pandemic threats such as avian influenza, global food safety emergencies such as chemical or biologic hazards, and other biological threats such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria have considerable impacts on social stability and security at the global level. FAO’s regional One Health workshop “Towards Integrated and Effective Animal Health–Food Safety Surveillance Capacity Development in Eastern Africa” held in January 2013 was designed and delivered as a participatory regional event, with the main goal of enhancing regional collaboration in an imal health (AH) and food safety (FS) surveillance, using the principles of the globally endorsed One Health approach.
