The Workshop was organised within the framework of the FAO/WECAFC ad hoc Working Group on shrimp and groundfish fisheries of the Brazil-Guianas Shelf that was established in 1984 at the recommendation of the WECAF Commission, given the nature and characteristics of the fisheries resources in this region. The Group has been meeting yearly since 1996 to undertake stock assessments of the main commercial species of shrimp and groundfish. One of the main objectives was to use the results o f these assessments to investigate alternative options for managing these fisheries and to provide scientific advice for management. This series of stock assessment workshops were facilitated by FAO, through its Regular Programme and inter-regional Projects GCP/INT/575/DEN – “Training in Tropical Fish Stock Assessment” and GCP/INT/648/NOR- “Assistance to Developing Countries for the Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries” and CFRAMP (CARICOM Fisheries Resourc es Assessment and Management Programme)....
