The Workshop was organised within the framework of the FAO/WECAFC ad hoc Working Group on shrimp and groundfish fisheries of the Brazil-Guianas Shelf that was established in 1984 at the recommendation of the WECAF Commission, given the nature and characteristics of the fisheries resources in this region. The Group has been meeting yearly since 1996 to undertake stock assessments of the main commercial species of shrimp and groundfish.
