This manual is a practical field guide for stakeholders involved in the production and protection of traditional leafy vegetables and spice crops using nature‑positive and agroecological farming practices. It is designed for smallholder farmers, kitchen gardeners, extension staff, community trainers, researchers, students, development practitioners, and farmer-based or non-governmental organisations.
The guide provides clear, relevant information on the identification, symptoms, and economic impacts of major pests and diseases affecting traditional leafy vegetables and spice crops, and promotes affordable, eco-friendly, and nature-positive management options, drawing on field experience from Western Kenya (particularly in Kisumu County) and research-validated agroecological strategies, including cultural practices, biological control, and home-made botanical pesticides.
Overall, the manual supports knowledge transfer for farmer training and extension work. It offers adaptable, low-cost solutions that enhance crop health, improve vegetable production, strengthen food and nutrition security, and encourage the development of context-specific innovations based on local resources.
