An "FAO expert consultation on nutrition education for the public" met in Rome, Italy, from 18 to 22 September 1995. The work of this consultation was built upon a long history of commitment to nutrition education by the Food and Nutrition Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The report of the Joint FAO/WHO Committee on Nutrition in 1950 was the first to emphasize nutrition education. In 1958, the same expert committee considered education to b e "a necessary part of practical programmes to improve human nutrition" .
