Inconsistent food safety standards and supply chain barriers can slow vital aid in times of crisis, when every hour counts. The Standards and Accountability for Effective Relief (SAFER) project is a joint FAO–WFP initiative that seeks to ensure that humanitarian food assistance is safe, nutritious, and reaches people fast. It brings together governments, food aid agencies, and partners to create science-based, context-appropriate systems that work in the real world. Through a progressive pathway to safer food, SAFER aims to help strengthen national systems, saving lives today and building safer, more resilient food systems for tomorrow. This two-pager serves as a clear, accessible introduction to the SAFER project and its importance in strengthening food safety and quality in humanitarian food assistance. It is a versatile outreach tool to engage partners, donors, policymakers, and technical stakeholders, especially during events, meetings and outreach activities, helping to raise awareness, spark collaboration, and build support for crisis-responsive food safety systems.
