The second webinar in the Cadmium Talks series, focused on managing cadmium in cocoa from Latin America and the Caribbean. The project aims to build capacity and share knowledge to meet the European Union’s 2019 regulations on maximum cadmium levels in cocoa and chocolate products. Dr. Elizabeth Johnson emphasized minimizing cadmium contamination across the entire cocoa value chain. The webinar explored differences in regulations for contaminants versus pesticides, and outlined specific EU cadmium limits based on chocolate type and cocoa powder. Codex Alimentarius standards were also discussed, which are generally aligned but slightly more lenient than EU limits. The event stressed that regional producers must comply with these standards to access European markets.
