Farmer Field Schools (FFS) are ‘schools without walls’ where capacity is developed from existing local knowledge. A FFS usually comprises a group of 25-30 producers who meet regularly in a local field setting under the guidance of a trained facilitator. Through a systematic action learning process, they make observations on production and the ecosystem, focus on a topic of study, and compare the effects of alternative practices throughout the production cycle to decide how to improve their practices. FFS offer safe and risk-free learning spaces for hands-on group experimentation, enhancing participants’ skills for critical analysis, and improving their decision-making. Programmes combine FFS with other activities to build social and human capital at multiple scales.
