Finance and Health Ministers in the Pacific SIDS have called for an investigation of the ‘best bet’ food-based taxes under the Regional NCD roadmap. The potential publication will be based on the findings from the following work commissioned from a regional Service Provider: a) a brief literature review of the main food systems-related drivers shaping diets and dietary transition in Tonga and Palau; the main food systems-related policies/programmes currently used; and a summary of recent initia tives in the Pacific that have used economic tools such as taxation to improve diets; b) qualitative research to get a snapshot of recent food taxes in Tonga, including the processes that led to the adoption of these taxes, views of different players in the food system re. them; and Recommendations from a Stakeholder Consultation workshop to present the findings.
