From April 2022 to March 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) implemented the project Hosting of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) Office with financial support from the Government of Norway. The project enabled FAO to host and operate the GFOI Office, providing core secretariat services and day-to-day coordination for the GFOI partnership. GFOI brings together donors, development partners and technical agencies to coordinate international support to tropical countries for the development and long-term sustainability of national forest monitoring systems (NFMS).The project contributed to measurable progress in forest monitoring and climate reporting by tropical countries. A growing number of countries are now monitoring their forests using NFMS and reporting results to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
