The research had as objective to characterize pineapple (Ananas comosus) growers of the region of the Papaloapan in Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 315 growers belonging to the municipalities of Juan Rodriguez Clara and Isla, Veracruz, were interviewed using an instrument of 55 items. They were interviewed on the local markets known as the “bascule”. The main problem the farmers face is the lack of organization in terms of marketing issues and the effect of low prices, as the product is marketed in the national market and the most important variety is the Cayena, which does not compete with international varieties such as the MD2. In terms of technical consulting, this is normally given by the providers of agrochemical products; hence the institutions of research and education are not relevant in the region. It can be concluded that in order to increase the competitiveness of the growers is necessary to improve their training programs and their marketing chains with direct agreements with other agents of the metropolitan regions of the country.
