On January 1, 2015 Germany will introduce a universal minimum wage of € 8.50 per hour. In agriculture, a comparatively large number of employees earn less than the minimum wage, so that farmers will have to react to the new statutory wage base. Corresponding working hypotheses are formulated and the suitability of existing datasets for evaluation of the minimum wage is explored in this working paper. Most micro-data that might prove satisfactory for evaluation in larger sectors is not suited for agriculture-related analyses due to small sample sizes. Farm accountancy data (Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) is, in principle, an appropriate data source but does not provide all information necessary to identify those farms that are affected by the minimum wage. All in all, quantitative analysis of minimum wage effects in agriculture is rather limited so that qualitative methods will be an essential component in future minimum wage studies.
