Bahrain faces increasing environmental pressures linked to urban expansion, water scarcity, high temperatures and land degradation. Limited green public spaces and weak institutional capacity for urban forestry have constrained efforts to improve environmental quality and climate resilience.The project “Building Greener and Healthier Cities in Bahrain” was implemented jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to support the government in strengthening urban greening and afforestation systems. The initiative aimed to enhance institutional and technical capacities, improve nursery management and promote climate-resilient urban landscapes aligned with national priorities, including the National Afforestation Plan (2022–2035) and Bahrain’s climate commitments.Through targeted technical assistance, capacity development and knowledge exchange, the project supported the transition towards greener, healthier and more resilient urban environments.
