This research paper aims to explore and promulgate ideas on what the multilateral trading system could do to support increased sustainability in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
Even without new agreement on trade rules among WTO members, significant progress can take place through the regional trade agreements and gradual construction of consensus and the pursuit of complementary reforms at the multilateral level. This is a critical area of work. Promoting sustainable agriculture through multilateral trade is both possible and necessary, given the scale of international trade in agriculture and related products.
