Fisheries provide a vital source of food, employment, recreation, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world, both for present and future generations, and should therefore be conducted in a responsible manner. The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) provides principles and standards applicable to the conservation, management and development of all fisheries, taking into account the relevant biological, technological, economic, social, environmental and commercial aspects. The FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), meanwhile, was established by the FAO Conference in 1965, and is the only global intergovernmental forum in which FAO Members meet to review and consider the issues and challenges related to fisheries and aquaculture. The 35th session of COFI (COFI35) reiterated the value of the CCRF for achieving sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and recognized the progress made in its implementation since its adoption, while noting that further improvements are needed to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
