The Japan forestry outlook study outlines the broad social context and the institutional and legislative framework that governs forestry in the country. The broad status of forests including key management issues including demands for ecosystem services and wood products, as well as challenges associated with forest health and fires are discussed. Particular issues relating to mountain villages, forest ownership and forest cooperatives are described. Japan has set a range of targets in relation to strengthening the multifunctional roles of forests and meeting demands for wood products and measures being implemented to meet these targets, and to promote sustainable forest management, are outlined.
