One billion people around the world are supported by a myriad of family and community-managed agricultural systems that represent humanity’s common heritage. Over centuries, generations of farmers and herders have developed complex, diverse and locally adapted agricultural systems that have been managed using time-tested, ingenious combinations of techniques and practices that bring about food and livelihood security, while conserving the natural resource base. Some of these systems are Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
