Reliable access to safe water is essential for food security; however, water systems globally are under unprecedented pressure. Agriculture accounts for over 70% of freshwater withdrawals, and climate change, population growth, and societal changes increase water demand. As a result, agrifood systems increasingly rely on alternative water sources that may be of lower or uncertain quality. While progress has been made in identifying microbial risks in agrifood water sources, guidance on chemical hazards remains limited.This webinar was organized by the Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division of FAO as a launch event for the joint FAO/WHO report titled “Prioritizing food safety issues related to chemical water quality in agrifood systems.” The event aimed to present the publication’s key findings and foster discussion on food safety aspects related to water use in agrifood systems with a focus on risk assessment for waterborne chemical hazards. The webinar was conducted as part of the FAO Food Safety Foresight Programme.This report summarizes the key conclusions of the webinar.
