Wetlands provide a range of ecosystem services by supporting water security, food security and ecological security, biodiversity as well as farmers’ and fishers’ diversified livelihoods. However, wetlands are under huge pressures. Issues of wetland degradation and loss were highlighted in the SDG6 2018 Monitoring Report, which stated that 70 per cent of global natural wetlands have been lost in the last century, with profound impacts on economic development and social and environmental stability.
This brief highlights both general issues and specific challenges and problems in the Mekong Region for wetland agriculture and water management, and provides recommendations for conservation actions.
