A number of voluntary initiatives have been developed by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), trade unions and companies to promote banana production, trade and consumption based on social and ecological principles and which involve monitoring, certification, labelling and codes of conduct. This study examines the main certification programmes in the banana sector. Te report is divided into three sections, the executive summary will follow this structure, including General Princip les and Objectives, Monitoring and Control, and Standards. The Standards section, comprising the bulk of the report, is sub-divided into environmental, social and economic-institutional criteria.
