dc.descriptionThe project was delivered in five phases: ( i ) a literature search, (ii) a comparison of analytical methods, (iii) sample collection, (iv) genetic analysis and otolith and shark vertebrae microchemistry analysis, and (v) statistical analysis and population structure synthesis to identify discrete spawning populations . The project included a review of the available information on the population structure for the 11 species involved, and provided an assessment of the use of the genetic methods to be used for the genomic characterization of each species . A detailed sampling protocol was developed to guide the collection and treatment of genetic samples from across the Indian Ocean. This involved developing and extending research networks among scientific institutes and accessing genetic material from partner archives. The latest information on the population structure of four species of tuna, three tuna like species, three billfish species and blue shark in the Indian Ocean are detailed in a comprehensive report.
