The effect of different levels of mulberry (Morus alba) on the degradation in the rumen of the dry matter of mulberry and three tropical grasses: jaragua (Hyparrhenia rufa), kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum) y Brachiaria brizantha was studied in Turrialba, Costa Rica. The nominal degradation rate (in hours) was mulberry (0.143), brizantha (0.047), kikuyo (0.042) and jaragua (0.032). The differences between mulberry and the grasses were statistically significant no statistically significant differences were detected between grasses. Rumen degradability of the dry matter of the grasses was not affected by the levels of mulberry in the diet, but the proportion of mulberry in the diet affected its own rate of degradation.
