Project GCP/RAF/287/ITA – Land Cover Mapping of Eastern Africa based on Satellite Remote Sensing - was implemented in two phases from January 1997 to September 2003. It was funded by the government of Italy (total cost $9.54m) and executed by FAO in cooperation with ten countries of Eastern Africa. Participating countries were Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic republic of Congo. These countries, which cover an area of 8.5m sq km, make u p the East Africa module of FAO’s ‘Africover’ initiative to establish for the whole of Africa a digital geo-referenced land cover database and a geographic referential, using satellite remote sensing data.
