This document is intended as a practical tool for fisheries stakeholders in the Black Sea, including commercial fishers and fisheries observers, to correctly identify three sturgeon species in the Black Sea, apply safe release practices when the species are incidentally caught during fishing operations and systematically collect data on incidental catch and vitality conditions. It fits into the framework of the “Fisheries and ecosystem-based management for the Black Sea” project (FishEBM BS) project, which aims to reverse the overexploitation of select commercial living marine resources by enhancing the capacity of Black Sea countries to manage fisheries, including through the application of ecosystem-based management tools.
