Civil strife over the period 1975-94 has seriously disrupted the Angolan economy, devastated the country’s logistic infrastructure and marketing network, displaced a large proportion of the farming population and severely undermined food production. Despite a gradual recovery in food production since the initiation of the peace process in 1994, an adequate supply of food remains beyond the means of large sections of the population, which continue to depend on international relief assistance. Giv en the continued food supply difficulties, an FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Angola from 28 April to 12 May 1997, to estimate the 1996/97 harvest of foodcrops and estimate cereal import requirements for the 1997/98 marketing year, including food aid. This year, unlike in previous years, the Mission was able to visit more provinces at the time of harvest. De-mining of roads and negotiations of right of passage meant that the Mission could visit more provinces by road, ext ending the scope for observations, field surveys and farmers interviews in both Government and UNITA-held areas. In all, 15 of the 18 provinces were visited.
