Saint Vincent and the Grenadines faces major challenges following the decline of traditional agricultural export crops such as bananas and sugar. With a national food import bill of USD 74 million annually, containing many products that could be produced locally, there is an urgent need to diversify and modernize the agricultural sector. The COVID-19 pandemic and 2021 volcanic eruption further underscored the importance of building competitive, sustainable and resilient value chains for food security and economic growth. The project successfully strengthened the dasheen and hot pepper value chains in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, enhancing production, market development, and institutional capacity.The project first conducted a comprehensive rapid value chain selection assessment, initially reviewing 21 commodities before narrowing the focus to six potential crops: sweet potato, mangos, breadfruit, hot peppers, plantains and coconuts. Following systematic analysis, dasheen and hot peppers were identified as the two value chains with the highest potential for in-depth development.
