Since the latter half of the 1990s, rice demand in sub-Saharan Africa has continued to rise sharply, thereby increasing the volume of imports. The recent fluctuations in global grain prices have aggravated the situation and made the poor more vulnerable to the risks of food insecurity. Efforts to expand rice production and its post-harvest aspects in the region are therefore urgently needed. In response, the project attempted to contribute to the establishment of a modern and profitable agricultural sector to be put in place through the design and implementation of evidence-based agriculture and rural development policies and programmes for rice in three target countries – Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria.
