This edition of EMPRES Watch focuses on the detection and subsequent spread of A(H5N1) in dairy cattle across the United States of America, while presenting the latest updates on the risks, accompanied by recommendations tailored for a global audience. This outbreak represents a key event in the ongoing evolution of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses. Initially reported on 25 March 2024, this reassortant virus combines Eurasian HPAI H5N1 2.3.4.4b and North American gene segments, presenting a new challenge amidst a global surge in HPAI cases since 2021. The article explores what is known and unknown around disease transmission, clinical impacts in cattle, and implications for the dairy industry and global trade. Recommendations include implementing robust biosecurity measures, enhancing surveillance, preparing for emergency response through contingency planning, and sharing information widely to mitigate further spread – all of which underscore the need for collaborative One Health approaches across sectors.
