Corn and Rice Yield and Acreage Response to Prices, Policy and Climate Factors in Togo

dc.descriptionThe primary objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of market prices, weather, and policy variables on crop yield and acreage response in Togo using panel data estimators. Results show that both input (fertilizer) and output prices have statistically significant and expected effect on corn acreage. Output price also has significant but opposite impact on corn (negative) and rice (positive) yields. As expected, rainfall during planting months has a significant impact on both corn (April) and rice (May) acreage allocations. Similarly, total rainfall during growing season has significantly positive impact on both corn and rice yields. Moreover, recent agricultural policy initiative designed to boost domestic food production has significantly increased corn and rice yields and corn acreage.
