dc.descriptionThe Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides statistics in FAOSTAT on the production and final consumption of bioenergy. Data, based on the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) Energy Statistics database, are produced annually and disseminated by country, with regional and global aggregates. Bioenergy statistics are provided by type of biofuel as follows: i) solid biofuels (animal waste, bagasse, black liquor, charcoal, fuelwood, other vegetal material and residues); ii) liquid biofuels (bio jet kerosene, biodiesel, biogasoline, other liquid biofuels); iii) gaseous biofuels (biogases). This brief provides an analysis of the 2025 FAOSTAT data release, with a focus on bioenergy final consumption statistics for the period 1990–2023.According to the latest data available, world bioenergy final consumption increased by nearly two-thirds between 1990 and 2023, from 24.4 exajoules (EJ) to 39.5 EJ. In 2023, bioenergy final consumption was dominated globally by solid biofuels (35.0 EJ or 89 percent), followed by liquid biofuels (4.4 EJ, or 11 percent) and gaseous biofuels (0.1 EJ, or 0.3 percent).
