dc.descriptionIn the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, currentvegetable production of about 1.50 million tonnes fallsshort by about one million tonnes of meetingthe requirement of 2.5 million tonnes, based on therecommended consumption of 300 g of vegetablesper day per individual, excluding potato. This is reflectedin the inadequate intake of fresh and processedvegetables by a large number of the population; andits impact on public health is visible in significant levelsof undernutrition and malnutrition prevailing amongchildren of less than five years of age and breastfeedingwomen. Against this background, the project aimed toimprove vegetable seed production by introducingsuperior quality seed in the major vegetables in thecountry, enhancing technical knowledge and skills, andidentifying and using innovative production practices,in order to support sustained increase in vegetableproduction.
