Descripción
This terminal evaluation reviews the “Integrated ecosystem management program for the sustainable human development in Mauritania”. The project aimed to sustainably improve the livelihoods and the natural resource base upon which rural communities depend in three landscapes of southern Mauritania. The project activities were largely complete, but outcomes were mostly not achieved. The large size of the project intervention area and spatially dispersed project activities meant that no critical mass was achieved. The evaluation mainly recommended that the GEF and FAO (the implementing agency) ensure that future projects are realistic in scale and scope, have flexibility to respond to emerging local priorities and adopt forward planning to ensure timely implementation; leverage successful models of long-term community-based natural resource management institutions; ensure meaningful stakeholder and community participation.
