Descripción

The Serra Gaúcha region, located in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul state, is the most important wine and grape producing region ofBrazil. In this region lies the Vale dos Vinhedos area, known for its vineyards and the high quality of its wines. Vale dos Vinhedos is the first brazilian geographical indication for wines. This paper's main objective is to identify and quantify, using GTS techniques, the total area of vineyards established in permanent preservation areas, according to the Brazilian environmental laws, in the "Vale dos Vinhedos" Geographical Indication area. For so, it were made slope and drainage network maps from a 2-meter resolution digital elevation model, in order to identify the permanent preservation areas according the environmental law. The vineyard area map was obtained from a 60-centimeter resolution aerial imagery mosaic, manually c1assificated. Afier, the maps were crossed to identify the conflict areas. The Vale dos Vinhedos Geographical Indication total area is 8121.65 hectares. Of these, 1499.45 hectares (18.46% of total area) were identified as permanent preservation areas. The total vineyard area is 1,932.86 hectares (23.8% of total area). The conflict areas totalizes 140.85 hectares, 7.29% oftotal vineyard area and 1.73% ofthe geographical indication area.
