dc.descriptionRESUMO - O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a variabilidade genética da raça Caracu por meio do cálculo do coeficiente de consanguinidade e do tamanho efetivo populacional. O arquivo de pedigree de 130.165 animais foi obtido da Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Caracu (ABCCARACU). O banco de dados foi dividido nos períodos de 1979-1983, 1984-1988, 1989-1993, 1994-1998, 1999-2003 e 2004- 2008. O coeficiente médio de endogamia dos animais consanguíneos foi 3,6; 4,1; 4,4; 4,1; 3,6 e 3,7%, de 1979-1983 a 2004-2008, respectivamente. O tamanho efetivo populacional estimado por meio do aumento individual no coeficiente de endogamia foi 62, 61, 73, 99, 113 e 113, também o tamanho efetivo populacional estimado por meio da regressão do coeficiente de consanguinidade sobre o número de gerações equivalentes foi 32, 28, 34, 42, 57 e 60, de 1979-1983 a 2004-2008, respectivamente. O coeficiente médio de consanguinidade e o tamanho efetivo populacional indicam níveis moderados. Apesar disso, os resultados indicam que a proporção de indivíduos consanguíneos vem aumentando. ABSTRACT - The aim of this study was to determine the genetic diversity in the Caracu breed by calculating the level of inbreeding and effective population size. Pedigree records on 130,165 animals were obtained from the Brazilian Association of Caracu Breeders (ABCCARACU). The data set was divided in the following periods from 1979-1983, 1984-1988, 1989-1993, 1994-1998, 1999-2003 and 2004-2008. The mean inbreeding of inbreed animals was 3.6, 4.1, 4.4, 4.1, 3.7 and 3.6 from 1979-1983 to 2004-2008, respectively. The effective population size computed via the increase in inbreeding for each individual was 62, 61, 73, 99, 113 and 113 also the effective population size computed via regression on equivalent generation was 32, 28, 34, 42, 57 and 60, from 1979-1983 to 2004-2008, respectively. The mean inbreeding and the effective population size indicate a moderate level. Despite of this, the results indicate that the proportion of inbreed individuals is increasing.
