Descripción
Over the past decade, several Asia-Pacific countries have banned harvesting in natural forests, often as a political reaction to crises such as flooding and loss of biodiversity and natural habitats. This publication is a compilation of country studies by national experts in China, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam on the impacts and effectiveness of logging bans in the above countries.. Concluding that "…logging bans are inherently neither good nor bad", it lists a range of conditions for their successful application. However, the study recommends bans as simply one set of policy tools available to decision-makers within a spectrum of options and alternatives. If bans are adapted selectively and used in combination with other complementary policy instruments, they can help assure that natural forests will be sustained and will continue to contribute to enhancing the well-being of the people of Asia and the Pacific.
