dc.descriptionEn el Centro de Investigación (ci) Motilonia, que pertenecía al Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ica), se centró la investigación en el algodón, cuando Agustín Codazzi (Cesar) era la ciudad blanca de Colombia. Alrededor de este cultivo estaban especialistas a nivel de doctorado y maestría, en todas las áreas del conocimiento. Fue hacia 2002 cuando la Confederación Colombiana del Algodón (Conalgodón) manifestó que uno de los problemas sentidos por los productores algodoneros era el costo del rubro de fertilización, el cual hacía insostenible el cultivo, por lo que los investigadores iniciaron estudios junto con el doctor René Novo, investigador cubano experto en microbiología de suelos, específicamente en bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno, a partir de aislamientos de bacterias promotoras del crecimiento vegetal que pudieran complementar parcialmente la fuente de nitrógeno de las plantas sin afectar su rendimiento.
