The marine fisheries sector is vital to the BOBP-IGO Member States, with fish harvesting generating about 2 million jobs. Yet, fishers work long hours in strenuous activities and an arduous marine environment, making marine fisheries one of the riskiest occupations in the world with 30,000 to 100,000 estimated deaths per year! Fishers face many hardships while going to sea, but they have no choice as they must support their families. They remain one of the most vulnerable working forces given the safety risks, lack of social protection, and poor working conditions. The Plan of Action for Safety, Decent Work, and Social Protection in the Bay of Bengal (BOBSAFE) aims to ensure that fishers’ safety is not the price we pay for our food.
