dc.descriptionIn mid May 2018 Fall Armyworm ( was detected on the Indian subcontinent for the first time, with significant evidence of the pest in India’s southern Karnataka state, and reports of its spread to the states of Tamil Nadu and Telangana Given the possibility of FAW spreading to neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, there were serious concerns that the pest may put maize production in the region at risk, with potentially dire economic consequences As well as maize, cotton, groundnut, tobacco and cabbage were among the 80 crops considered susceptible to FAW attacks A national workshop organized by the Ministry of Agriculture ( of Bangladesh in December 2018 confirmed that FAW infestation had been recorded on cabbage and maize crops in the districts of Bogura and Chuadanga Among the other outcomes of the workshop was the formation of a national taskforce to develop the necessary guidelines for FAW control In this context, the MoA of Bangladesh requested emergency technical assistance from FAO to identify, report and manage instances of FAW infestation in the country.
