For nutrition surveys whose objective it is to estimate prevalence of underweight and stunting among children under five years, the precise age of children is a crucial piece of information. When age is not estimated accurately, prevalence figures are often biased. In many countries young children do not have a record of date of birth and a calendar of local events can be used to estimate childrens month and year of birth. The guidelines show how to develop a detailed calendar of events to dete rmine the month and year of birth of young children and how to train field workers in the use of the calendar.
