Nigeria is facing one of the world’s most severe food crises, mainly driven by structural weaknesses, macroeconomic shocks, armed conflict, the impact of climate change and pest outbreaks. Millions have been displaced, livelihoods disrupted and smallholder farmers remain highly vulnerable. Despite these challenges, Nigeria has strong potential to improve food security and foster inclusive growth through targeted agricultural interventions in the northeast, northwest and north-central regions. Investing in agriculture can save lives, reduce import dependency, create jobs, and strengthen markets, even in conflict-affected areas.The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO's) Emergency and Resilience Plan (2026–2028) aims to reach 12.6 million people with a budget of USD 347 million, focusing on: (i) safeguarding rural livelihoods and improving nutrition; (ii) strengthening resilience to shocks; (iv) expanding market access and employment for women and youth; and (v) enhancing coordination and data-driven decision-making.
