After decades of overreliance on harmful chemical pesticides by producers, the Kavre district of Nepal became the birthplace of a remarkable grassroots innovation. Following the conclusion of an FAO-led Integrated Pest Management (IPM) project, a group of five Farmer Field School (FFS) farmer founded the Sayapatri Community IPM Resource Center to fill the resulting technical support gap. This producer-run center provides training, advisory services, and local production of environmentally safe biopesticides, including Trichoderma viride, entomopathogenic nematodes, and Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus. Operating in a remote village, the center has empowered over 1 200 producers, built capacity in IPM science, and created a sustainable model for community-led agricultural extension. It shows that FFS farmer facilitators and graduates can diversify beyond agricultural production to lead and maintain a fully operational laboratory autonomously. This grassroots model has strengthened agroecological transitions and reduced environmental and health risks linked to chemical-intensive agriculture.
