As a response to the floods and landslides, the Government of Rwanda deployed important efforts to boost the national poultry production, and investment in egg production was identified as a great potential to close the projected meat consumption gap in animal protein sources, and could significantly contribute to the reduction of malnutrition and stunting rate in Rwanda. In addition to the floods, in August 2023, an outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) disease was reported in Rwanda for the first time. According to official information, the PPR outbreaks started in Kayonza district (bordering the United Republic of Tanzania), and simultaneously spread to Karongi (Kibayu). The disease can have a severe negative socioeconomic impact on the income of livestock farmers and, particularly on the livelihoods and food security of the most vulnerable rural communities.Initially, the project aimed to mitigate the negative impacts of floods, mudslides and PPR outbreak resulting from recent adverse climatic shocks, using a household approach. However, during the implementation phase of the project, the government advised to change the approach and to introduce the poultry model farm for efficient management.
