This analysis examines the case studies on the regulatory frameworks adopted by Indonesia and Portugal for the recognition of family farming, identifying success factors, institutional challenges, and recommendations to strengthen institutional frameworks aimed at supporting family farming.The experiences of Indonesia and Portugal illustrate the importance of institutional frameworks in strengthening family farming. In both cases, formal recognition by the State has generated benefits for family farmers, while also highlighting the structural challenges faced by the sector, including agricultural modernization, generational renewal, the preservation of diverse ecosystems, the sustainable management of natural resources, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage that underpin food security for present and future generations.
