This comparative analysis seeks to derive lessons on the institutional arrangements and intervention approaches implemented in Brazil, Italy and Thailand to promote the empowerment and economic opportunities of rural youth, in contexts where family farming is affected by labour shortages, low productivity and youth migration. The comparison of these cases enables the identification of key factors supporting generational renewal in family farming. All three countries face a rapidly ageing farming population and have developed rural financing mechanisms and youth entrepreneurship support schemes that address access to land, productive assets, capacity development, and technology as pillars for the modernization and sustainability of family farms. These mechanisms combine incentives for generational renewal with credit and subsidy schemes of varying scales, alongside direct support for strengthening the capacities of young farmers. They also integrate the participation of farmers’ organizations, promoting youth self-employment and facilitating their integration into agricultural value chains.
