The high cost of obtaining information through the use of sea-going platforms highlights the desirability for optimum utilization of vessels services placed at the disposal of the scientific community. Long-term and cruise planning, monitoring and evaluation of results are discussed and the report demonstrates the need for close cooperation between the user and the vesselâ¿¿s managers. Also examined ate various alternatives available for the acquisition of scientific information including the ch arter and commercial vessels and issuing of equipment.
