The value chain concept has become very popular in agricultural development. This brief gives an explanation of what value chains are and describes how the use of the concept can help governments support their farm-ers in understanding market opportunities better and increase their incomes. We will use the example of the onion value chain in Northern Belize to illustrate the use of a market-oriented value chain approach.
