Drop in rice production in 2010/2011 and disruption of market supplies due to recent cyclone led to higher rice prices. Despite improved food security conditions in southern regions, increasing prices are expected to aggravate the situation particularly as the lean season is approaching. Nearly 259,000 people were affected by the cyclone Giovanna and by torrential rains which have damaged agriculture particularly in coastal areas. The government is building up stocks to assist people dur ing the approaching lean season. International agencies are also helping in delivering food assistance to the population affected from the flood.
