The development and economic growth of many countries in the Europe and Central Asia region, including Georgia, depend on the performance of their agricultural sector, and this, in turn, is directly related to the capacity of their national food authorities Traditionally, the mission of the National Food Agency at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is to implement the legal requirements related to animal and plant health and food safety The strategic vision for agricultural development 2015 2020 of MEPA is to “create an environment that will increase competitiveness in the agrifood sector, promote stable growth of high quality agricultural production, ensure food safety and security, and reduce rural poverty through sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas The impetus for food systems was obtained through an Association Agreement with the European Union in June 2014 The aim of the Agreement includes Georgia's gradual economic integration into the European Union’s internal market, based on sustained and comprehensive regulatory approximation In return, Georgian products are granted duty free access to the European market The provisional duty free export of goods has been practised since September 2014 The entirety of the provisions to be implemented by Georgia is contained in the Acquis Communautaire which is the accumulated legislation, legal acts and court decisions constituting the body of European law.
