This study represents the first comprehensive application of the Carbon Footprint (CF) Rice tool across an extensive dataset, analyzing 131 rice mills across four provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong River Delta to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the entire rice value chain of a Winter-Spring season. Crop production data were derived from regional statistics and established emission factors, while processing stage parameters were obtained through structured miller surveys supplemented by secondary data. The CF Rice tool is designed exclusively for rice production and processing systems. Built on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and aligned with IPCC guidelines, it provides a standardized framework for quantifying GHG emissions across entire rice value chains while pinpointing critical emission hotspots for targeted mitigation strategies. The research reveals significant opportunities for emission reductions through targeted interventions in both field and post-harvest operations.
