The 26 December 2004 Asian earthquake and tsunami is considered by many to be the worst natural disaster to occur in living memory. The sheer scale and complexity of damage to the countries of the Indian Ocean is without precedent. Indonesia and Sri Lanka were the countries most affected. Fisheries and aquaculture were the sectors most severely hit by the disaster. In Indonesia between 170 000 and 220 000 people were killed. Total losses associated with fisheries were about US$5 23 million, of which 80 percent was attributed to losses in fishing production. In Sri Lanka over 31 000 people were killed and the estimated losses to fisheries were about US$297 million. This document provides an account of the status and trends in the fisheries resources of Sri Lanka and Aceh Province, Indonesia prior to and immediately after the tsunami. Important lessons learned on fisheries, fished resources and their ecosystems are provided, as well as recommendations to ensu re the sustainable use of fisheries resources.
